Using the Atkins Diet To Lose Weight

Dr. Robert Atkins, a cardiologist, created the Atkins diet in early 2000. The diet program caught on rather quickly and seemed to be quite effective. Many celebrities, as well as people from all parts of the world made up the millions of followers of this plan.

The diet was based upon a book that Dr. Atkins published in 1999 titled, "Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution". Even though the diet had many critics, the book took hold and became a number one best seller in bookstores everywhere. The book even topped the New York Times bestsellers list, which is a high honor for any author. The book remained on the bestsellers' list for over seven years.

Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution is comprised of a total of seven chapters. From explaining the basics of the program, to providing numerous tips on how to lead the healthiest lifestyle possible in the 21st century, and even providing several recipes dieters can make right in the comfort of their own home; the book seemed to have it all.

The number on reason people were drawn to the Atkins diet to lose weight was because they were allowed to choose the types of foods the wanted to eat, and make their own meals. The diet was less expensive than having to purchase diet meal plans, and choosing foods the diet allowed kept people on the program.

The Atkins diet is often referred to as the most well known of the low carbohydrate diets. The diet restricts just about all types of carbs, and is based upon the idea that eating fewer carbs will cause the body to use other sources of energy, such as stored fat, thus resulting in weight loss. The diet also became quite popular among people in the diabetic community. This plan allowed diabetics to better regulate their blood sugar levels, while maintaining their weight.

While many people achieved very good results on the Atkins diet, it does not do much to promote lifestyle changes for the long-term. Dieters found that in order to keep the weight off, they had to stay on the plan, following the guidelines exactly. As soon as they stopped the diet, the weight came right back, and often more than they lost. The American Heart Association also had concerns regarding this diet, and issued a warning to consumers that it was too high in fat, while being too low in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients.
